Navigating the Challenges of Business English as a Clinical Research Leader
Have you ever felt the struggle of expressing yourself eloquently, being culturally aware, and injecting personality into your words, all while working in a language that isn't your native tongue?
Can you relate? I certainly can.
I vividly recall watching a scene from "Modern Family" that resonated deeply with me. Gloria, a character in the show, expressed the struggle of articulating thoughts precisely in a foreign language. It struck a chord, echoing the challenges many non-native English speakers, especially those in the clinical research field, face daily.
I remember watching that very scene in “Modern Family” and thinking: “Yes! They have no idea how hard it can be to be me in a different language. To express exactly what I want to say, to sound professional, to be funny, polite, or whatever else I want.”
When Gloria said, "Do you even know how smart I am in Spanish?" I felt that. It felt good to share the frustration and identify with someone. Even if it was only with a series character - Gloria.
Gloria reminded me of myself. She was a Colombian who moved to the USA and needed to swap Spanish for English.
Similarly, I’m originally Polish but 24 years ago I moved to the UK and have been living and working in the UK for the National Health Service in English since.
I understand what it’s like to work with native English speakers, trying to fit in culturally, showing your expertise, and trying to inject your own personality into what you’re saying but keeping it professional and being aware of all the nuances that could show you up.
I want to make a difference. I want to help non-native English leaders to do what they want to do to develop their careers in global clinical research and trials, feel confident about themselves even though English is their second language.
I know what it’s like to feel self-doubt and imposter syndrome. I also know that it’s possible to overcome it and I want to help you do the same.
Have you ever watched “Modern Family”? It’s about a modern family, their struggles, and funny situations. I found this particular episode very relatable.
